Pilot and Exploratory Grants

The Pepper Center awards new Pilot and Exploratory Studies on an annual basis. We are dedicated to pioneering research into the complexities of mobility loss and the development of preventive strategies for older adults.

Our mission is to catalyze groundbreaking studies that pave the way for future, independently funded research efforts.

Our Aims

  • Cross-Disciplinary Innovation: We are bridging basic science and clinical practice, spurring research that translates lab findings into meaningful clinical outcomes.
  • Supporting New Researchers: By promoting the involvement of early-stage investigators, we are nurturing the next generation of aging research leaders.
  • Resource Provision: We are your partner in research excellence, offering comprehensive support from study design and data management to human subjects recruitment and clinical interventions.
  • Data Exploration: We facilitate analyses of existing databases to uncover new insights and guide future research directions.
  • Progress Tracking: Our commitment is to monitor and advance pilot studies, ensuring they are on track to achieve their goals.
  • Funding Facilitation: We are committed to helping researchers leverage pilot study findings to secure substantial extramural funding.

Through careful selection of innovative pilot and exploratory studies aligned with the Older Americans Indepedence Centers’ focus on mobility and independence, PESC ensures that researchers have the optimal resources and environment to succeed. Our pilot studies dive into the underlying mechanisms of mobility impairment and may include preliminary testing in humans or animals to assess interventions for safety and effectiveness. Exploratory studies are crucial for shaping future research, as they develop new study designs and analyze data from large OAIC datasets.

Growing Our Network

We are fostering a collaborative ecosystem where novice researchers and seasoned experts in aging—and those from other fields—are encouraged to contribute to the understanding and promotion of mobility and independence. With the Pepper Center  support, researchers can collect the preliminary data crucial for crafting competitive applications for independent funding.

Pilot awards are necessary to unlock new avenues for interventions that prevent mobility loss and decline in physical function that ultimately help older adults maintain their independence. Our support extends to all investigators, with a special focus on empowering Early Stage Investigators to build fulfilling research careers in aging.

Join us in this critical endeavor to shape the future of aging research and improve the lives of older Americans.
